England remain the favourites with the bookmakers to win the tournament despite producing three underwhelming performances during the group stage.

Euro 2024 – Last-16 Preview

Anyone who has watched England during the group stage would be hard-pushed to explain why they are still the favourites to win the tournament.

Aside from the early part of their fixture against Serbia, the Three Lions have failed miserably to live up to expectations.

A win and two draws in one of the weakest groups was a disappointing return for Gareth Southgate’s side and they make zero appeal as a betting proposition.

Last-16 opponents Slovakia proved they could be troublesome by defeating Belgium in their first game and will fancy their chances of causing an upset on Sunday.

Spain were the only side to advance to the last-16 with a perfect record and are big favourites to progress from their last-16 tie against Georgia.

However, they have landed in a tricky half of the draw alongside Germany, Portugal, France and Belgium, and backing them to win the tournament is fraught with danger.

Germany are expected to be their quarter-final opponents, while one of the other trio will probably be waiting if they make it through to the last four.

On that basis, the other half of the draw offers an intriguing betting possibility for punters searching for a bit of value.

England are a best-priced 6/4 to reach the final, but the manner of their group stage performances means there is little to be gained by backing them.

Italy and Netherlands were both below their best in their groups and will need to step things up in their respective last-16 ties against Switzerland and Romania.

Having defeated Netherlands 3-2 in the opening phase, Austria could be overpriced at odds of 9/1 to reach the final in Berlin.

They look a good bet to defeat Turkey in the last-16 and a victory there would set up a quarter-final tie against Netherlands or Romania.

England and Italy are expected to contest the other quarter-final and would hold no fears for Austria if they advance to the last four.
